David Nala (formerly Itzi Nallah) is the resident DJ and faithful organizer of CumbiaSazo, Chicago’s largest and one of the US’ most expansive cumbia + global bass parties. Having also worked with FEX, Sonic Diaspora and Peoples DJs Collective, his cultural projects focus on community-building, global roots & bass music, and liberation-minded dance floors. Nala has worked dance floors throughout the US and past residencies in Chicago include The Shrine, Double Door and Harbee. Show highlights include sharing stages with acts ranging from Ozomatli, Rich Medina, Nickodemus and A Tribe Called Red to Pete Rock, Javier Estrada, El Dusty and Haitus Kaiyote.
When not DJing or producing events, Itzi Nallah consults in web, design & business/creative strategy for clients ranging from start-ups & artists to non-profits & unions. His background includes teaching, organizing, and communications stints for the United States Social Forum, Southwest Youth Collaborative and Teachers for Social Justice, and he has served as a board member with the Fire This Time Fund, Literacy Works, AREA Chicago, and Public Square at the Illinois Humanities Council.
